What's a Dopamine Detox and How To Do One...
Once I defeat the chemical imbalance in my brain it's over for you hoes.
LOVING LATELY:
Three clean beauty empties I’ll be replenishing: this mascara, this under-eye concealer and this face wash.
I shared my favorite housewarming gift on Instagram and 34 people bought it. It’s incredible (this is my favorite scent).
I almost bought these earrings at a much higher price point, but last-minute found this dupe which are a dead ringer (and 1/3 the price)!
Now back to the regularly scheduled program…
Ever feel like your brain’s stuck in overdrive, jumping from one thing to the next without ever really landing? Yeah, me too.
That’s why, in this week’s episode of the Rituelle Podcast, we got into something super important: the dopamine detox.
We’re talking about what it is, why we all seriously need one, and how you can do it without totally going off the grid.
What’s A Dompamine Detox?
Dopamine is like your brain’s own little cheerleader—it’s what makes you feel good when something great happens.
But here’s the thing: in today’s world, we’re getting hit with so many dopamine highs that our brains are starting to crave more and more, just to feel normal.
A dopamine detox is all about hitting the reset button. It’s not about cutting out everything fun, but more about finding balance and teaching your brain to chill out and enjoy the simple stuff again.
Why Should We Care?
All those dopamine hits can mess with our heads in ways we don’t even realize:
Attention Span? What’s That? Constant stimulation makes it harder to stay focused on anything for more than a few minutes.
Motivation Goes MIA: When your brain’s always looking for the next big thrill, even the simplest tasks start to feel like a drag.
Mental Burnout: All that overloading eventually leaves us feeling wiped out and just plain tired of everything.
That’s why a dopamine detox is a total game-changer. It helps you get back to basics, so you can actually enjoy life without constantly chasing the next high.
How to Do a Dopamine Detox
Digital Detox: Set some boundaries with your screen time. Maybe check your phone at specific times, and use those app timers to keep yourself in check.
Find Your Zen: Do something that’s not about instant gratification, like reading a book or taking a walk outside (and leave your phone behind if you can).
Simplify Your Space: Declutter a bit and try focusing on one thing at a time. It’s amazing how much more you’ll enjoy stuff when you’re all in.
Reflect and Write It Down: Keep a little journal where you jot down what you’re grateful for. It helps shift your focus to what really matters.
Eat Mindfully: Slow down at mealtime. Actually taste your food, and enjoy the whole experience of nourishing yourself.
Tune into this week’s podcast for more examples of good vs. bad dopamine!
The Takeaway
A dopamine detox isn’t about giving up everything that makes life fun. It’s about giving your brain a break and finding joy in the everyday moments. Trust me, you’ll feel more balanced and maybe even a little happier once you’re not constantly chasing that next hit.
Thanks for hanging out with me in this week’s newsletter. If you think someone else could use a little brain reset, go ahead and share this with them. And if you haven’t subscribed to the Rituelle Podcast yet, what are you waiting for? We’ve got lots more good stuff coming your way.
xx,
Erika
